Tim Maguire

Tim's Bikes

A few days ago Brian Bartel and I collected Tim Maguire's bikes to prepare them for the memorial service. I was impressed by how well kept they where. We only had to wipe some dust off a couple, but otherwise they were all ready for riding. Note that almost nothing on his bikes is from the stock purchase. He modified everything, so they are an interesting reflection on who Tim was. Each bike showed 1000-2000 miles on the odometers.

Tim's 2011 Rides

In 2011, Tim Maguire started using the SportyPal app on his phone to record his rides. I'm fairly certain all of his rides from 2011 are recorded on his profile page there. He had just under 700 miles listed. That wouldn't include his trainer miles. Judging by the look of his tires on his trainer bike, I'd say he put in a fair number of miles on his trainer.

On September 6 he posted the following update on Facebook: Read more

Damn You Tim and Your Endearing Idiosyncrasies

There are some peculiarities about Tim's passing that are fitting. An obvious one to me, was that he died on the longest night of the year, Winter Solstice. Perhaps more importantly, he gave in shortly after daybreak on the first day of Winter. This is significant because Tim hated riding his bike in Winter. In fact, he usually hibernated indoors on the trainer to begin his preparation for the race season. I would only see him outside well after the snow melt. Read more

@tbmaguire Tim's Tweets

Tim only used Twitter for about a month (then he turned to FB), but it was a quality month of tweets! Since I was his one and only follower, I decided to share what you all missed (scroll down to start from the beginning):

Tim Maguire Memorial Fund

A special fund for Tim Maguire, a cyclist we lost suddenly on December 22, 2011. This fund will be used for something time trial related, perhaps a permanent roadside marker in his name.

Images of Tim

Thinking of Timmy, I've been trying to dig up more pictures. In the process, I found one gem that Tim took himself. It was the finish of the 2008 Slammer Road Race in Boise. I missed the finish because I was preparing for the Category 3 race. Tim's best friend Brian Bartel rode up to me to let me know he had just won the race (because of genius preparation). Read more

Tim Maguire 1974-2011: TT in Peace

Tim Maguire is undoubtedly the greatest bike time trialist La Grande has ever seen. He tested himself on every unofficial local course and most all of the official regional courses in Oregon (see his profile at OBRA), Idaho, and Washington. Tim intensely focused on improving his riding position, technology, and training techniques. He is a huge loss to us, with the news of his death earlier today from a heart problem. Read more
